TRIO Student Support

The TRIO program offers academic and personal support for students with disabilities, those who are first-generation college students (meaning neither parent graduated with a bachelors degree), or individuals who are low-income. The goal of the program is to reduce barriers to help students successfully complete classes, graduate, and/or transfer to a 4-year institution.

TRIO will provide:

 
  • Academic advising and intervention throughout the year
 
  • Free tutoring support
 
  • Career advising and networking opportunities
 
  • Resume preparation and job placement services
 
  • Participation in cultural enrichment opportunities
 
  • Help applying for and understanding the financial aid process
 
  • Financial literacy workshops/budget planning
 
  • Visits to four-year institutions to discuss transfer options

Who can participate in TRIO?

  • Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or meet residency requirements for Federal student financial assistance
  • Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment at OCTC (priority to full-time status)
  • Must be low-income, first-generation, and/or disabled (priority given if more than one category)
  • Must show demonstrated need for academic support (must meet a minimum of one below)
    • COMPASS placement in development courses
    • College GPA under 2.5
    • Low high-school GPA and/or poor attendance record (of those transitioning from secondary to post-secondary)
    • GED recipient
    • Returning to school after 2 or more years
    • Returning from academic or financial aid probation
    • Undecided major or career
    • Career/major in challenging discipline (engineering, medicine, etc.)
    • Lack of exposure to cultural events

Participants Responsibilities:


 
  • Check KCTCS email daily
 
  • Meet TRiO advisor each semester
 
  • Attend tutoring sessions
 
  • Attend TRiO workshops and a peer panel each semester

We are located upstairs in the LRC (Library) near TRAC Central.
