However, a pivotal job opportunity at a Tyson Chicken plant brough him to Kentucky.

Arturo was placed in Owensboro Regional Recovery, a local treatment program, and was court ordered to earn his GED to complete his recovery. After finishing taking the GED test and passing, staff at the facility encouraged him to continue his education and go to college. After months of hard work and perseverance, Arturo not only earned his GED, but also graduated with his associate degree in two years. This achievement marked the beginning of a profound personal and educational journey.

Chapter 3: Embracing the College Experience

Inspired by his success with the GED and his associate degree, Arturo decided to take his education further by enrolling in Western Kentucky University to earn yet another credential, his bachelor’s degree in social work. The supportive and inclusive environment at OCTC provided him with the perfect platform to thrive academically and personally.

While this degree marks a significant milestone, Arturo still says earning his GED diploma was his greatest achievement. “I'm most proud of getting the GED. Once I got the GED, I realized that is a key to the ignition. I could take the car wherever I wanted. Now it's up to me where I want to go.”
