Nature Center Receives National Certification
The National Wildlife Federation has recognized the Virginia Miles Nature Center at Owensboro Community amp; Technical College as a Certified Wildlife Habitat. The 18-acre nature center attracts a variety of birds, butterflies and other wildlife in a natural setting.
NWF began the Certified Wildlife Habitat Program in 1973 and has since certified 150,000 habitats nationwide. To become certified, a property must provide the four basic elements all wildlife need: food, water, cover and places to raise young. Certified habitats also conserve natural resources by reducing or eliminating the need for fertilizers and pesticides.
OCTCs nature center is home to many species of wildlife throughout the year and serves
as a stopover site for migratory birds. The college uses the center for service learning
projects, and area school children visit the site frequently for fieldtrips.
