OCTC Common Reading Event-Sept. 22

Owensboro Community amp; Technical Colleges Kaye Brown and Tonya Northenor will host Propaganda amp; Perception: The Holocaust and You, as part of the colleges Common Reading activities. The event is free, the public is invited, and the event will be held on Wed., Sept. 22 from 12:30-1:45 PM. The event will be segmented in to two sections, from 12:30-1:15 PM the focus will be on the power of the Nazi propaganda campaign, featuring various propaganda posters. Then from 1:15-1:45 PM there will be discussion on how to effectively and sensitively teach about the Holocaust and genocide. The presenters, both Assistant Professors of English, attended the Belfer National Conference for Educators, held at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum this summer.

The OCTC Common Reading projects book this semester is Maus: My Father Bleeds History (Volume 1). This graphic novel tells the true story of Art Spiegelman's father, a Holocaust survivor, in the period leading up to the Holocaust.

What is the OCTC Common Reading? Each semester a book is selected as OCTCs Common Reading, with the idea that all participants could read the same material and have common ground for new discussions and mutual interests. While the book choices vary in many ways (different genres, time-periods, subject matters) they are chosen with the intention of expanding the knowledge and perspectives of readers. The background of the selected writers is diverse; however, many Kentucky and regional writers are also included in order to help us appreciate local talent, acknowledge shared concerns, and celebrate our common heritage. All OCTC students, staff, faculty, and interested community members are invited and encouraged to participate by reading the books and attending the related presentations each semester.
