OCTC HONORS 2016 HALL OF FAME ALUMNI

Owensboro Community amp; Technical College is proud to honor Mary Durr as the newest member of the Super Sunday Hall of Fame.

Super Sunday is an annual Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) statewide initiative intended for African-American and Latino students and their families. The event provides information and resources to support college admissions and enrollment. As part of this initiative, a Super Sunday Hall of Fame has been established, highlighting outstanding African-American and Latino alumni.

For over twenty years Mary Durr has been a welcoming presence at Owensboro Community and Technical College. She began at OCTC in 1994 as a non-traditional student with 3 daughters and wanted to serve as an example for them, to prove that education and hard work truly pays. Serving the college as the switchboard operator, mailroom supervisor, and assisting with room set up for special events, Mary has her pulse on the campus, and serves as a liaison to community members using college facilities.

Mary brings ingenuity and compassion to her multifaceted position, striving to be a buck stops here person. She is a friendly face, warm voice, and an information hub that listens, directs, and assists as needed. Mary is a vital part of the OCTC family and has served in a variety of capacities, always willing to help in any way, and always with a smile. Mary was honored by her selection as a member of the Super Sunday Hall of Fame and added, I believe that learning is not limited to age. Learning is something we should all strive to do, in one manner or another, all of our lives.

Mary is a prime example of success for our students, and we are so proud to be able to honor her with this award commented Scott Williams, President of OCTC.

OCTC will sponsor Super Sunday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 507 Plum Street at 10:45 a.m. on February 28. On this day, OCTC and each of the other 15 KCTCS colleges and System Office will partner with churches in their communities to host information fairs for prospective college students and their families.

Dr. Scott Williams will speak briefly to the congregation and a college fair will be held immediately following the service.

Since the program began, KCTCS has partnered with nearly 200 churches and reached approximately 42,000 participants through our Super Sunday events. KCTCS has also seen a 14 percent increase in our enrollment of students who self-identify as under-represented populations.
