OCTC Speech Debate Team Earns 8th State Championship
OCTC Speech team members captured the Overall Community College State Championship for the eighth time in the last eleven years February 18-19 at the Kentucky Forensics Association (KFA) State Championship. The team won the overall Debate Sweepstakes, the Individual Events Sweepstakes award (both for Community Colleges), and earned third place in the Small College Overall Debate Sweepstakes in competition with 4 year colleges.
Owensboro debaters won several major awards including the Top Novice Team award, and top two Novice speaker awards (1st and 2nd). Tara Lee (1st) and James Smith (2nd) compiled a 3 win 3 loss record in prelims. OCTC's Dee McHenry also debated as part of a hybrid team with Transylvania University's Ben Overstreet.
OCTC also won a bevy of individual student awards including:
Tara Lee, Owensboro: 4th Place in Radio Broadcasting, 6th Place in After Dinner Speaking, Top Community College Speaker in Dramatic Interpretation,
Top Community College Speaker in After Dinner Speaking, Top Community College Speaker in Extemporaneous, Top Community College Speaker in Impromptu, and Top Novice Performer in Quadrathon, a competitive award for students entered in 4 or more speech events.
James Smith, Owensboro: 5th Place in Radio Broadcasting, Finalist Communication Analysis, Top Community College Speaker in CA,
Top Novice in CA.
Dee McHenry, Owensboro: 6th Place Poetry, Top Community College Speaker in Poetry.
