Super Sunday College Fair and "Men Praising God Choir Day"

Owensboro, KY (January 25, 2011) Owensboro Community amp; Technical College, in conjunction with the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS), are launching a statewide Super Sunday initiative to increase the college-going rate of African-American students. On February 27, all 16 KCTCS colleges and the System office will partner with African-American churches in Kentucky to reach out to parents and students in their congregations to promote higher education.

On February 27, Dr. Jim Klauber, president of OCTC, will speak as part of the program at the Men Praising God Choir Day at 3PM hosted by the H.L. Neblett Center, to bring awareness to the role of parent involvement and early preparation in getting to college. Following the performance, college representatives will host an information fair about the college planning process, admissions, degree programs,financial aid, transfer, and more.

As part of the Super Sunday initiative, each college is nominating Hall of Fame representatives to highlight successful alumni. The Owensboro candidates are George Henderson, who in addition to his duties at UniFirst, currently serves on the board of directors for both the college and OMHS. The second candidate is Carltez Hampton who currently serves as assistant director of the childcare facility at the Neblett Center and recently earned his bachelor's degree from WKU-O. For most Kentuckians, higher education begins at one of the states 16 community and technical colleges. It is a vital part of the KCTCS mission to ensure the states diverse populations receive every opportunity to obtain a college education. KCTCSs Super Sunday is modeled after a highly successful program that California State University has hosted every year since 2005.

This is the first year KCTCS is offering a Super Sunday event, but it will become an annual occurrence and will later focus on other diverse populations including Latinos. Super Sunday events are open to the public and everyone is invited to attend.
