What is Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)?
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) provides pre-hospital emergency care to acutely ill or injured patients. The EMT course (EMS 105) is offered during the Spring and Fall semesters and takes just 16 weeks. Course graduates meeting all program requirements are eligible to take the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) Examination upon completion. Apply to Owensboro and choose "EMT" as your major. The program is six credits and is offered during the evenings on the Owensboro Campus, to be accessible to students who work during daytime hours.

- What is an Emergency Medical Technician?
- Emergency Medical Technician, or EMT, is a provider of basic life support for sick or injured patients. EMT is usually the entry level of care for those seeking a career in emergency medical services (EMS) agencies. EMT certification is also helpful or necessary for those working in fire service, law enforcement, industrial, and other settings.
- Why do I have to become an EMT to enroll in the Paramedic program?
- It's the law. Kentucky Administrative Regulations require a current, unrestricted state or National Registry EMT certification to be eligible to enroll in a paramedic program.
- It prepares you for the next step. The foundational material in EMT class is built upon in the paramedic program, enabling students to assess and treat more complex medical or trauma issues.
- What is the EMT course curriculum?
- The EMT curriculum provides foundational knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology, scene and patient assessment, airway and ventilation, cardiovascular and body systems support, motion limiting devices, wound and fracture management, administration of basic patient medications, extrication, transportation, and patient monitoring as well as medico-legal aspects and ambulance operations.
- How long does it take to get your EMT certification?
- The course is a 6-credit hour, 16-week (1 semester) course. Students who successfully complete the EMT course are eligible to challenge the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Certification Exam.
- What are the meeting days and times?
- Lecture and skill lab sessions are 2-3 days per week and in the evenings. (you can put days/times here if you want, but if anything changes, this answer would need to be updated) In addition to these meetings, students are required to complete 24 hours of observation time at an EMS agency or in a hospital Emergency Department.
- Are there any prerequisites?
- According to Kentucky Administrative Regulations, EMT applicants must:
- Be a citizen of, permanent resident of, or legally authorized to live and work in the United States.
- Submit, from a contracted 3rd party vendor, a valid (< 6 month old) background check in compliance with applicable regulatory statute.
